About Washington University OBGYN

While Washington University School of Medicine was established in 1891, the school’s Department of Obstetrics was founded in 1899, when Dr. Henry Schwartz served as the first head. In July 1929, it became an independent Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, which continues to serve the women in their community today. Currently, seven board-certified or board-eligible, US residency-trained OBGYNs are available to help care for women from childhood to menopause. Their dedicated team of professionals works together to help women live healthier lives and help grow their families with academic support. They take immense pride in being national leaders in OBGYN care, with over 500 deliveries. So when it comes time to add a new member to the family, they want you to turn to the best!

Whether your pregnancy goes as planned or unexpected complications arise, their team, ranked among the nation’s top healthcare providers, will see that you receive the highest quality of care available every step of the way. When it comes to quality care, they aim to be a part of solutions with inclusion, diversity, and equality. No matter who you are, they provide individualized and comprehensive care from beginning to end. Above all, they strive for each physician to look past your chart and see you. Not just your symptoms.

Access to quality care with an array of services can bring peace of mind. Washington University OBGYN strives to bring each patient peace of mind and comprehensive care. So you feel confident no matter the delivery plan you have in store. You can schedule your prenatal visits at either of their locations in South County or the Central West End. When it’s time for the baby to arrive, all patients deliver at the Women and Infants Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. For prenatal care, they take a team approach that allows you to have quality care:

What the team approach looks like:

  • You will meet and get to know each doctor. This allows you to feel comfortable and see the physician delivering your baby.
  • World-class diagnostic screenings and ultrasounds
  • A physician always assists patients in labor, allowing prenatal appointments to proceed as scheduled.
  • All of their obstetricians double as general gynecologists. This will enable you to keep your chosen physician and continue your care without hassle after your baby arrives.
  • Their physicians work closely with the newborn specialists at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. If any fetal abnormalities arise during your pregnancy, they promptly discuss prenatal and pediatric options to prepare you and your care team.

Specialty

Not only do they have some of the top physicians, but they help teach them as well. They offer a highly competitive training program and outstanding learning opportunities for physicians and scientists to add to their professional development. Alongside teaching residents, they are also a world-recognized facility for cutting-edge research. Molecular research contributes to preterm birth, minimally invasive gynecologic surgery procedures, and global health issues that cause unwanted early labor. Their sought-out faculty and esteemed staff lead new cutting-edge research focused on reproductive health. Who knows, you could be a part of something truly groundbreaking!
